History of Leura
Leura developed as a mountain resort village after the arrival of the Main Western railway line in the late 19th century, with Leura Railway Station opening in 1890. Subdivision and promotion as a cool-climate retreat led to Edwardian and Federation-era buildings along Leura Mall. Everglades, designed in the 1930s by Danish-born landscape designer Paul Sorensen for Henri van de Velde, is a significant inter-war garden estate now managed by the National Trust of Australia (NSW). The village is listed as a heritage conservation area.
Culture & Context
Leura is recognised as a garden village and heritage conservation area within the Blue Mountains, known for its cool-climate gardening tradition, historic streetscape and community events such as the Leura Gardens Festival established in the 1960s. It forms part of the cultural landscape of the Greater Blue Mountains region, valued for its village character, garden heritage and gateway role to Blue Mountains National Park.
