History of Legship
Legship developed as a bazaar and transit settlement on the historic trade route along the Rangit River. The Kirateshwar Mahadev Temple is traditionally associated with the Mahabharata legend where Lord Shiva appeared as a Kirat (hunter) to Arjuna, and the site has long been a pilgrimage center on the riverbank.
Culture & Context
The town is culturally significant for the Kirateshwar Mahadev Temple, a major Shaivite pilgrimage site in Sikkim. The temple draws devotees especially during Maha Shivaratri and Bala Chaturdashi festivals, when rituals are performed on the Rangit riverbank. It reflects the syncretic Hindu-Buddhist cultural landscape of West Sikkim.
