About Lamai Beach
Lamai Beach is a 4-kilometre sandy beach on the southeastern coast of Ko Samui in Maret Subdistrict, Ko Samui District, Surat Thani Province, Thailand. Located south of Chaweng, it is the island's second-largest resort beach. Known for its fine white-yellow sand, clear water, palm-fringed shoreline and the nearby Hin Ta Hin Yai rock formations, it offers a more relaxed atmosphere than Chaweng while providing swimming, dining and accommodation options.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a long, curved sandy beach with clear shallow water, palm trees and a backdrop of resorts, restaurants and shops along the beach road. The central and northern sections are best for swimming and sunbathing, while the southern end near Hin Ta Hin Yai features granite boulders and viewpoints. History of Lamai Beach
Lamai developed as Ko Samui's second major tourist beach after Chaweng following the island's opening to tourism in the 1970s and 1980s, evolving from a quiet fishing and coconut plantation area into a resort beach with hotels, restaurants and infrastructure.
Culture & Context
The beach is closely associated with the nearby Hin Ta Hin Yai rock formations, which are linked to local folklore about an elderly couple and are considered a cultural landmark and photo spot for visitors.
