History of Lalbandh
Lalbandh was constructed as a large artificial reservoir during the rule of the Malla kings of Bishnupur, who ruled from around the 7th to 18th century and developed Bishnupur as a fortified temple town. The lake was part of an extensive system of bandhs (embanked reservoirs) created for water supply, irrigation, flood control and defence of the town. It reflects the medieval hydraulic engineering and urban planning of the Malla period.
