About Lake McKenzie
Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora) is a perched freshwater lake in Great Sandy National Park on K'gari (Fraser Island) off Queensland's Fraser Coast. Fed solely by rainwater and perched above the water table on compacted sand and organic matter, it is renowned for exceptionally clear blue water and pure white silica sand. Located inland near the centre of the island, it is one of K'gari's most visited natural attractions within the UNESCO World Heritage-listed island.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a closed perched lake with vivid turquoise-blue water fringed by pure white silica sand and surrounded by banksia, eucalypt forest and sandy tracks. The lake is rainwater-fed with no inflow streams, creating very clear water ideal for swimming and wading. A designated day-use area with beach entry, shallow margins and deeper central water is accessible via short sandy walking tracks from the car park. No built structures in the water; experience is natural, tranquil and focused on swimming, relaxing on the sand and photography.

History of Lake McKenzie
Lake McKenzie is a classic perched lake formed over thousands of years where wind-blown sand and organic matter created an impermeable layer above the regional water table, allowing rainwater to accumulate. It lies within Great Sandy National Park on K'gari, the world's largest sand island, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Area in 1992 for its outstanding natural values.
Culture & Context
Known as Boorangoora to the Butchulla people, the Traditional Owners of K'gari, the lake holds cultural significance and is part of a landscape central to Butchulla stories and connection to Country. The island's Butchulla name K'gari is now officially recognised alongside Fraser Island.
