About Kutini-Payamu (Iron Range) National Park
Kutini-Payamu (Iron Range) National Park is a large protected area on eastern Cape York Peninsula in far north Queensland, about 100 km east of Weipa and near Lockhart River. It protects Australia's largest area of lowland tropical rainforest, heathland and mangroves. Notable for exceptional biodiversity, including eclectus parrots and palm cockatoos, WWII historic sites, and joint management with Traditional Owners, it offers remote camping, birdwatching and 4WD experiences.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a remote, largely undeveloped national park with dense lowland tropical rainforest, open heathland, mangroves and long beaches such as Chili Beach. Facilities are basic and centred on designated campgrounds at Chili Beach, Gordon Creek and Cooks Hut. Activities focus on nature observation, birdwatching, short rainforest walks, 4WD driving on unsealed roads, and viewing WWII airstrip remains. The park is jointly managed with Traditional Owners and has limited services, requiring self-sufficiency.
