History of Kushinagar Museum
The museum was established in 1992-1993 by the Government of Uttar Pradesh, Department of Culture, to house and preserve antiquities excavated at Kushinagar. Excavations at Kushinagar were first undertaken by Alexander Cunningham in the 19th century and later by the Archaeological Survey of India, revealing monastic complexes, stupas and sculptures associated with the ancient city of Kushinagara, where Gautama Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana. The collection spans from the Mauryan period (3rd century BCE) to the medieval period (12th century CE).
Culture & Context
Kushinagar is one of the four principal Buddhist pilgrimage centres associated with the life of Gautama Buddha. The museum preserves and interprets the artistic and religious heritage of Buddhism in eastern Uttar Pradesh, displaying images of Buddha, Bodhisattvas and related traditions that reflect the evolution of Buddhist art, as well as Hindu sculptures showing the region's cultural continuity. It serves as an educational resource for pilgrims and visitors to the sacred site.
