About Koyna Dam
Koyna Dam is a major rubble-concrete hydroelectric dam located on the Koyna River in Koynanagar, Satara district, Maharashtra. Completed in 1963, it is one of the largest civil engineering projects built after Indian independence and serves as a critical power source with an installed capacity of approximately 1,920 MW. The dam creates the Shivsagar Lake and is historically significant for surviving the devastating 1967 Koynanagar earthquake, leading to extensive seismic research and structural strengthening.
Visitors guide
Visitors can view the massive dam structure and its central spillway with six radial gates from designated viewing points. Boating is available on the adjacent Shivsagar Lake backwaters, offering scenic views of the surrounding Western Ghats. Access to the internal dam structure is restricted for security reasons and typically requires prior permission from authorities. The area features lush greenery and serves as a gateway to nearby wildlife sanctuaries and viewpoints.

History of Koyna Dam
Construction began in 1956 and was completed in 1963 as a key post-independence infrastructure project. The dam withstood the destructive 1967 Koynanagar earthquake (magnitude 6.3), which caused cracks that were later repaired through grouting and internal drilling to relieve hydrostatic pressure. This event triggered significant scientific study into reservoir-induced seismicity, making the site internationally important for earthquake research.
Culture & Context
The Koyna River is considered the 'life line of Maharashtra' due to its vital role in hydroelectric power generation and irrigation for western Maharashtra. The dam represents a landmark achievement in Indian civil engineering and sustainable development.
