History of Kot Bhramari Temple
The temple is believed to have been reconstructed by the Chand kings. According to local tradition, Adi Guru Shankaracharya stayed at this sacred place during his spiritual journey through the Himalayan region while traveling toward Garhwal. The site is associated with the ancient Katyuri dynasty (approximately 2500 BC to 700 AD), who established a fort in the Katyur valley. Goddess Bhramari and Nanda Devi were the Kuldevis (family deities) of the Katyuri and Chand kings.
Culture & Context
The temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhramari, who according to Devi Bhagavata Purana manifested to defeat the demon Arunasura. The annual Nanda Ashtami fair (also known as Kot ki Mai ka Mela) is celebrated from the 5th to 8th day of Chaitra Navratri. During this festival, the idol of Goddess Bhramari is taken in a ceremonial procession and joins the famous Nanda Raj Jat pilgrimage at Nandkesari on the banks of the Pinder River. Devotees sing Goddess jagars (folk songs) and perform folk dances during the festivities.
