History of Kodandaramaswamy Temple
The temple was originally constructed in 1889 by zamindars Dwarampudi Subbi Reddy and Rami Reddy of Gollala Mamidada. The imposing eastern gopuram was later constructed between 1948 and 1950. Built in South Indian Dravidian style, it reflects 19th and mid-20th century temple architecture in coastal Andhra and has become a landmark temple in the former East Godavari region, now Kakinada district.
Culture & Context
Dedicated to Lord Rama as Kodandarama (Rama bearing the bow), the temple is revered as Chinna Bhadradri, likened to the Bhadrachalam Rama Temple. It is a major pilgrimage centre for devotees of Rama, especially during Sri Rama Navami Brahmotsavams, Vaikunta Ekadasi and other Vaishnavite festivals, with daily pujas and cultural importance for the local community.
