About Kodaikanal Solar Observatory
The Kodaikanal Solar Observatory is a historic solar observatory located on the Palani Hills near Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu. Established on 1 April 1899 and operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bengaluru, it is situated at an altitude of about 2,343 metres. It is notable for its long-term solar observations, astronomy museum, and the discovery of the Evershed effect in 1909.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a hilltop scientific campus with historic domes, telescopes and an astronomy museum displaying solar images, spectroheliograms and instruments. The observatory offers guided tours of the museum and, weather permitting, views of the Sun through telescopes with solar filters. The surroundings are forested hills with cool climate and panoramic views of the Palani Hills. Access is limited to designated visitor areas and the museum.

History of Kodaikanal Solar Observatory
Established on 1 April 1899 as the solar physics observatory of the Madras Observatory, shifted to Kodaikanal due to its high altitude and clear skies. Operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, it has maintained continuous daily solar observations for over a century. British astronomer John Evershed discovered the Evershed effect - the radial outflow of gas in sunspots - here in January 1909.
Culture & Context
Recognized as a premier centre for solar physics and scientific heritage in India, contributing to long-term solar data archives and astronomy education. The observatory and its museum serve as an important educational and scientific attraction in the hill station of Kodaikanal.
