History of Kilkileshwar Mahadev
According to local tradition, the temple is associated with the Mahabharata period when Arjuna performed penance on Indrakila mountain to obtain the Pashupatastra from Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva appeared before Arjuna in the guise of a Kirata (hunter) to test his determination. The name Kilkileshwar is believed to derive from the joyful cries (kilkilana) of Shiva's attendants during this divine encounter. Some traditions attribute the temple's establishment or revival to Adi Shankaracharya, though this lacks conclusive historical documentation.
Culture & Context
The temple is an active place of worship for the local community in Srinagar Garhwal and surrounding villages. Mondays hold special significance for devotees, and during the holy month of Shravan (Sawan), the temple sees increased visitor numbers for Jalabhishek rituals. Mahashivratri is the most important annual festival celebrated at the temple with special prayers and devotional ceremonies.
