History of Kattabomman Memorial Fort
The original fort at Panchalankurichi was the stronghold of Veerapandiya Kattabomman (1760-1799), Palayakkarar of Panchalankurichi who resisted the British East India Company in the late 18th century. After his capture and execution in 1799, the British demolished the fort. The present memorial fort was reconstructed in 1974 by the Government of Tamil Nadu to preserve the site and commemorate his role in early resistance to colonial rule. The fort remains are protected as a memorial heritage site.
