History of Kasturchand Park
The land was ceded to the East India Company in 1818 and served as a British Madras Army arsenal storing gunpowder until the late 19th century. In 1908, philanthropist Sir Kasturchand Daga funded the construction of the existing sandstone pavilion to commemorate the Industrial Exhibition held on the grounds. A statue of Sir Daga was erected in the north-east corner in 1920 by Manekji Dadabhai.
Culture & Context
The park is one of Nagpur's primary venues for large-scale civic gatherings, political processions, cultural festivals, and annual events such as Dussehra celebrations. It has functioned as a central public meeting ground since the early 20th century, hosting industrial exhibitions and community functions that shaped the city's social life.
