History of Karnal Fort
Karnal Fort was built in 1764 by Raja Gajpat Singh, ruler of Jind State, after he captured Karnal from the Mughal governor. Due to Karnal's strategic position on the Grand Trunk Road, the fort held military importance. In the early 19th century it came under British control and was developed as a cantonment and administrative centre before the cantonment was later shifted. The fort reflects the transition from Mughal to Sikh and British administration in the region.
Culture & Context
The fort is a landmark of Karnal's historic urban core and represents the city's layered heritage. Karnal is traditionally associated with Raja Karna of the Mahabharata, and the fort adds to the city's historic identity alongside Karna Tal and other heritage structures, serving as a reference point for local history.
