About Karlu Karlu / Devils Marbles Conservation Reserve
Karlu Karlu / Devils Marbles Conservation Reserve is a protected area in the Barkly Region of the Northern Territory, about 105 km south of Tennant Creek on the Stuart Highway. It protects a striking field of large, rounded granite boulders scattered across a shallow valley. Formed over millions of years, the marbles are a sacred site for Warumungu and other Aboriginal groups and a major natural landmark between Alice Springs and Tennant Creek.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a wide, open desert valley scattered with hundreds of massive rounded granite boulders, some balanced precariously on top of each other. Sealed access roads lead to a day-use area and campground with short walking trails such as the Karlu Karlu Walk. The landscape is arid with spinifex and low scrub, offering expansive views, sunrise and sunset photography, interpretive signage about geology and Aboriginal culture, and clear night skies for stargazing.
