About Kargyak Village
Kargyak Village is a remote high-altitude settlement in the Lungnak Valley of Zanskar, Ladakh, situated at about 4,050 metres along the Kargyak River. It is the first village of Zanskar when approaching from Shingo La on the Darcha-Padum route. Known for traditional stone-and-mud houses, barley fields, and a small Buddhist monastery, it serves as a key overnight stop for trekkers and overland travellers exploring the Zanskar Himalayas.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a small, isolated Himalayan village with flat-roofed traditional stone and mud houses, irrigated barley and pea fields along the Kargyak Chu, and a hillside Buddhist monastery adorned with prayer flags. The setting is a wide, stark valley surrounded by barren mountains with views of Gumbok Rangan to the south. Facilities are very basic, limited to family-run homestays and tea houses. Visitors explore on foot, interact with Lungnakpa families, and experience a quiet agro-pastoral lifestyle.
