History of Karaikal Beach
Karaikal was a French colonial enclave on the Coromandel Coast until its de facto transfer to India in 1954 and de jure transfer in 1962. As part of the Union Territory of Puducherry, the town and its seafront developed under French administration and later integrated into the Indian Union, retaining administrative heritage linked to French Puducherry.
Culture & Context
The beach serves as the main public leisure and gathering space for Karaikal residents and visitors, used for evening recreation, family outings and seasonal festivals. It complements the town's coastal culture and its proximity to important religious sites such as Karaikal Ammaiyar Temple and Thirunallar Temple.
