History of Kara Fort Ruins
Kara was an important town and capital of the Kara-Manikpur province under the Delhi Sultanate. The fort is associated with the medieval period and the Khalji dynasty, including Jalal-ud-din Khalji who was governor of Kara-Manikpur before becoming Sultan, and Alauddin Khalji. The fort served as a military and administrative stronghold controlling the Ganges river route and the region between Delhi and Bengal. The present ruins reflect its medieval military architecture and subsequent decline.
Culture & Context
Kara is a historic settlement with cultural importance due to its long-standing role as a riverine town on the Ganges and its association with Sufi traditions, including the shrine of Hazrat Khwaja Karak nearby. The fort ruins are part of the local heritage landscape and are visited alongside religious sites in Kara.
