History of Kappal Matha Church
Tradition associates the shrine with Portuguese sailors in the 16th century who were saved from a shipwreck after praying to St. Anthony, leading to the dedication of a chapel at Uvari as Kappal Matha. The original chapel was later expanded and rebuilt into the present church, which has served as a centre for the coastal fishing community for several centuries.
