History of Kanvashram
Kanvashram is believed to be the ancient hermitage of Sage Kanva, one of the Saptarishis (seven great sages) mentioned in the Rigveda. According to Hindu mythology, this is where Shakuntala, daughter of Sage Vishwamitra and celestial nymph Menaka, gave birth to Emperor Bharat after marrying King Dushyant of Hastinapur. The name 'Bharat' for India is derived from this legendary emperor. The site gained renewed attention in 1955 when Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, inspired by a Soviet film adaptation of Abhijnana Shakuntalam, initiated efforts to establish a memorial at the location. Gurukul Kanvashram was formally established in 1972 by Swami Jayant Saraswati.
Culture & Context
Kanvashram holds immense cultural and spiritual significance as the legendary birthplace of Emperor Bharat, after whom India is named Bharatvarsha. The site is immortalized in Mahakavi Kalidasa's Sanskrit masterpiece Abhijnana Shakuntalam, one of the greatest works of Indian literature translated into numerous languages worldwide. The ashram continues the ancient Rishi tradition and Vedic culture through its gurukul system, offering education in Sanskrit, yoga, Vedanta, and Ayurveda alongside modern subjects. It serves as an important pilgrimage site for those interested in India's mythological heritage and spiritual traditions.
