About Kangaroo Point Cliffs
Kangaroo Point Cliffs are heritage-listed volcanic cliffs on the eastern bank of the Brisbane River opposite the Brisbane CBD in Kangaroo Point, Queensland. Extensively quarried from the 1840s to supply stone for early Brisbane, the 18-metre high cliffs now form Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park, a major urban recreation reserve. Notable for panoramic city and river views, rock climbing, walking trails and picnic facilities, it is a central landmark and popular outdoor leisure destination.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a linear riverside park set atop and below steep, rugged cliffs overlooking the Brisbane River and CBD skyline. The upper plateau offers paved walking and cycling paths, manicured lawns, barbecue and picnic areas, and lookouts with views of the Story Bridge and city. The lower base along the river has walking trails and gardens. The cliff face itself is used for rock climbing and abseiling, and is illuminated at night. The area is open and landscaped with seating and interpretive signage.

History of Kangaroo Point Cliffs
The cliffs are the remnant of a quarry that operated from the 1840s, initially using convict labour, to extract Brisbane tuff (porphyry) used to build early Brisbane structures including the Commissariat Store and Old Windmill. Quarrying continued until 1976. The site is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register for its importance to the development of Brisbane's building industry and as a distinctive landscape feature.
Culture & Context
The cliffs are an iconic Brisbane landmark and major community recreation space, widely used for outdoor fitness, climbing training, picnics and public gatherings, and valued for its scenic outlook over the Brisbane River and city centre
