History of Kalpa Village
Kalpa was historically known as Chini and served as the tehsil headquarters during colonial times before becoming the district headquarters of Kinnaur. It gained prominence following a visit by British Governor General Lord Dalhousie in the 19th century. The first primary school in Kinnaur opened here in the late 19th century.
Culture & Context
The village represents a syncretism of Hinduism and Buddhism, with temples dedicated to both faiths. The Narayan-Nagani Temple exemplifies local Kinnauri craftsmanship, while the Hu-Bu-Lan-Kar Monastery is attributed to Rinchensang-Po (950-1055 AD). Kalpa is also home to India's first voter, Shyam Saran Negi, and celebrates festivals like Fulaich during harvest season.
