History of Kalijai Island and Temple
The temple is associated with a local legend of a young girl named Kalijai who drowned in Chilika Lake while travelling to her in-laws' village and came to be worshipped as a goddess. The shrine on the island was established in her memory and has since become a prominent folk deity shrine for communities around Chilika Lake.
Culture & Context
Maa Kalijai is revered as a form of Goddess Kali/Durga and as the presiding deity of Chilika Lake. The temple is an important Shakti shrine in Odisha, drawing pilgrims year-round and especially during Makar Sankranti when a large annual fair and special worship are held. Fisherfolk and local communities invoke the goddess for protection on the lake.
