History of Kala Talao
Built around 1508 AD by Yusuf Adil Shah of Bijapur, Kala Talao was originally known as Shenale Lake. It served as a critical water source where British authorities later refilled water supplies. The name 'Kala Talao' became popular due to the adjacent Kali Masjid (Black Mosque). The lake's masonry-lined basin and natural spring wells have sustained water levels for centuries, making it one of Kalyan's oldest community water bodies.
Culture & Context
The lake serves as a central community space for cultural events, rituals, and daily recreational activities like yoga and morning walks. Its name derives from the historic Kali Masjid located on its banks, linking the site to local Islamic heritage. Recent redevelopment has reinforced its role as an inclusive public venue for residents across age groups.
