About Juag Lagoon Marine Sanctuary
Juag Lagoon Marine Sanctuary is a community-managed marine protected area in Barangay Calintaan, Matnog, Sorsogon, at the southern tip of Luzon. Established to conserve reef fish and marine biodiversity, the shallow lagoon encloses a fish sanctuary with thousands of tame fish. Visitors access the site by boat and observe fish feeding from floating cottages, making it a prominent ecotourism attraction in Sorsogon province.
Visitors guide
Visitors reach the sanctuary by a short boat ride from Calintaan shoreline to a sheltered lagoon enclosed by mangroves and limestone formations. The main area consists of floating fish cages and bamboo cottages on stilts over clear, shallow water. Visitors can view and feed large schools of fish including groupers, snappers and parrotfish, swim and snorkel in designated areas, and take photos from the cottages. Guides from the local fisherfolk association accompany visitors and explain conservation efforts.
