About Jogindernagar Haulage Trolley
The Jogindernagar Haulage Trolley is a historic funicular railway system built in 1926 by British engineers to transport construction materials for the Shanan Hydroelectric Power Project. Located in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, it is recognized as Asia's highest funicular track, reaching altitudes up to 2,500 meters. The system connects Jogindernagar to Winch Camp and Barot Valley through a unique pulley-based mechanism without engines. Although currently non-operational for regular transport, the trolley tracks and stations remain a significant engineering heritage site and a popular trekking route.
Visitors guide
Visitors can explore the historic trolley tracks that ascend steep mountain slopes from Shanan Power House towards Winch Camp. The site offers panoramic views of the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges, dense forests of rhododendron and pine, and remnants of the early 20th-century industrial infrastructure. Visitors typically trek along the rail lines, visiting stations such as Point 18 (Adit Junction) and Winch Camp. The area provides a quiet, offbeat experience with opportunities for photography and nature walks, though the trolleys themselves are largely stationary or non-functional for passenger rides.

History of Jogindernagar Haulage Trolley
Built in 1926 by English engineer Colonel B.C. Batty to transport heavy machinery and construction materials for the Shanan Hydroelectric Power Project, which was commissioned in 1932. It represents one of the earliest large-scale hydroelectric projects in India and is considered an engineering marvel of the 20th century due to the geographical challenges overcome in its construction.
Culture & Context
The haulage trolley system is a symbol of colonial-era industrial heritage in Himachal Pradesh and remains a point of local pride. It is associated with the development of Jogindernagar as a hub for hydroelectric power generation.
