History of Jambudweep Jain Museum
The museum reflects the Jain cosmological concept of Jambudweep as described in Jain scriptures, where Jambudweep is the central continent with Mount Meru at its centre. Palitana itself is an ancient Jain pilgrimage centre associated with Shatrunjaya hills, which houses more than 800 Jain temples dating from the 11th century onwards, and the museum helps interpret this heritage for visitors.
Culture & Context
The museum holds cultural and religious significance for Jain pilgrims and visitors by explaining Jain views of the universe, sacred geography and pilgrimage traditions. It complements the religious experience of visiting Palitana, which is considered one of the most sacred Jain tirthas, and serves as an educational centre for understanding Jain philosophy and cosmology.
