History of Jakkur Lake
Jakkur Lake is a historic man-made tank believed to be about 200 years old, originally built to support irrigation and drinking water needs of surrounding villages as part of Bengaluru's interconnected lake system. After decades of encroachment and pollution, it was rejuvenated in 2008-2009 by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike with support from the Bangalore Development Authority and JICA-funded project, including a 10 MLD sewage treatment plant and constructed wetland, becoming a widely cited model for urban lake restoration.
Culture & Context
The lake serves as an important community recreational and ecological space for North Bengaluru residents, supporting local biodiversity and environmental awareness activities, nature walks and birdwatching gatherings.
