About Ivanhoe Crossing
Ivanhoe Crossing is a historic concrete causeway across the Ord River, located about 12 kilometres north of Kununurra in the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley, Western Australia. Built in 1954 to service Ivanhoe Station and early Ord River irrigation, it is now a popular visitor site for river views, barramundi fishing, birdwatching and saltwater crocodile spotting. The crossing is usable by high-clearance 4WD vehicles only when river levels are low in the dry season.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a low concrete causeway spanning the wide Ord River surrounded by pandanus, paperbarks and sandy banks. When water is low, vehicles may carefully drive across the causeway; when water is higher it is submerged and closed. Visitors typically park on the bank to view the river, watch for saltwater crocodiles and birdlife, fish for barramundi from the bank, and photograph the river and sunset. There are no shops or built visitor facilities, with an informal gravel parking and viewing area.
