History of Idumban Hill
According to tradition, Idumban was tasked by Sage Agastya to carry two hills, Sivagiri and Saktigiri, suspended on a pole. When Murugan claimed one hill as his abode at Palani, Idumban was defeated in a contest and later blessed to be worshipped as a guardian deity at the entrance to Murugan shrines. Idumban Hill is identified with one of those hills and marks the origin of the Kavadi practice.
Culture & Context
The hill is sacred to devotees of Lord Murugan and is closely linked to the Kavadi tradition, where pilgrims carry offerings in imitation of Idumban's act. Idumban is worshipped as the guardian and gatekeeper of Palani Murugan Temple, and pilgrims often visit Idumban Hill before ascending the main Palani hill as part of the pilgrimage.
