About Hutt Lagoon (Pink Lake)
Hutt Lagoon is a large marine salt lake near Port Gregory in the Shire of Northampton, Western Australia, about 515 km north of Perth. Known as Pink Lake, its distinctive pink to lilac hue is caused by Dunaliella salina algae producing beta-carotene. Covering about 70 sq km, it is one of Western Australia's most photographed natural attractions and is viewed from a dedicated lookout on Port Gregory Road, with colour intensity varying by season and sunlight.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect to view the expansive shallow salt lake from the dedicated Pink Lake Lookout on Port Gregory Road, with parking and interpretive signage. The lake displays shades from pale pink to bubblegum pink and lilac depending on time of day, cloud cover, salinity and algae concentration. The surrounding landscape is flat coastal dunes and salt flats separating the lagoon from the Indian Ocean. Visiting is primarily roadside sightseeing and photography; direct access onto the lake bed is not permitted as it is an active commercial salt and beta-carotene operation.
