History of Hunderman Museum of Memories
Hunderman Brok was inhabited by Balti families and was under Pakistani administration until the 1971 war, after which it came under Indian administration. Many residents moved across the border, leaving homes and belongings behind. The museum, established in 2017 by local resident Ilyas Ansari with community support under the 'Unlock Hunderman' initiative, preserves these abandoned homes and artefacts to document village life and the impact of the 1971 war on the border community.
Culture & Context
The museum preserves and showcases Balti culture, language, traditional architecture, and rural lifestyle of the Hunderman Brok community. It serves as a cultural memory centre for the Balti people of Kargil and educates visitors about border village traditions, crafts and everyday life.
