History of Hoysaleswara Temple
Built in the 12th century during the Hoysala Empire, construction is believed to have started around 1121 CE under King Vishnuvardhana and continued for many decades. Built from soapstone, it represents the mature phase of Hoysala architecture and was the centre of the Hoysala capital Dwarasamudra (present Halebidu). The temple remained incomplete and shows extensive damage from historical invasions, but retains exceptional sculptural detail.
Culture & Context
Dedicated to Lord Shiva as Hoysaleswara, the temple is a major Hindu pilgrimage and cultural landmark. It exemplifies Hoysala art and iconography with sculptures of Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma and other deities. Together with Belur and Somanathapura, it forms the Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023, and is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
