Hopkins Falls

Hopkins Falls is a wide cascade waterfall on the Hopkins River near Cudgee in Moyne Shire, Victoria, about 15 kilometres north of Warrnambool. The falls drop about 12 metres over a 90-metre-wide basalt ledge formed by ancient lava flows. Set within a small scenic reserve with viewing platforms and picnic facilities, it is notable for its impressive winter and spring flows and is a popular short stop in the Great Ocean Road hinterland.

Visitors can expect a broad, 90-metre-wide basalt waterfall dropping about 12 metres into the Hopkins River, viewed from dedicated lookout platforms above and opposite the falls. The site is set in a grassy reserve with river flats, basalt cliffs and eucalypts. Facilities include a car park, picnic area and short paths to lookouts. The falls flow year-round but are most spectacular after winter rains; in dry summer months flow can be low.

The falls were formed where the Hopkins River cuts through basalt plains created by lava flows from nearby volcanic activity, including Mount Rouse and Mount Napier. The basalt ledge creates the wide cascade. The area lies within the traditional lands of the Eastern Maar people.

The Hopkins River and surrounding basalt plains hold cultural significance for the Eastern Maar Traditional Owners. The falls and river landscape are valued as a natural landmark and scenic reserve for the local community and visitors to the Moyne Shire and Great Ocean Road region.
