History of Hon Ong (Whale Island)
Hon Ong (Whale Island) is named after the traditional whale worship (Ca Ong) of central Vietnamese fishing communities. The island lies in Van Phong Bay, historically a fishing and sheltered anchorage area, and has remained largely undeveloped with only a single resort established to preserve its natural environment.
Culture & Context
The island reflects the coastal fishing culture of Khanh Hoa Province and the regional tradition of venerating whales (Ca Ong) as protectors of fishermen, from which the name Hon Ong derives. It is valued as a nature-based, low-impact tourism site within Van Phong Bay.
