History of HMT Heritage Centre and Museum
Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) was established in 1953 by the Government of India with technical collaboration from Oerlikon of Switzerland, to produce machine tools for industrialization. Later HMT diversified into watches in collaboration with Citizen Watch Co. of Japan in 1961, tractors, printing machinery and other engineering products. The Heritage Centre and Museum preserves this industrial legacy, documenting HMT's contribution to India's self-reliance in manufacturing and its iconic status as India's timekeeper through HMT watches.
Culture & Context
The museum represents Bengaluru's industrial heritage and the cultural memory associated with HMT watches, which were widely used across India for decades. It serves as an educational resource on India's manufacturing history and is valued for preserving the engineering and design heritage of a landmark public sector enterprise.
