About Heritage Street
Heritage Street is a 1-kilometre pedestrian promenade in central Amritsar, Punjab, connecting the Town Hall to the Golden Temple (Sri Harmandir Sahib). Redeveloped and inaugurated in 2016, it features red sandstone facades, colonial-style lamp posts and open plazas inspired by traditional Amritsari architecture. The street is notable as the main ceremonial approach to the Golden Temple and as a cultural and shopping hub with handicraft shops, eateries and public art installations.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a wide, vehicle-free pedestrian street paved with stone leading directly to the Golden Temple entrance. Both sides are lined with uniform red sandstone buildings with arched facades, shops selling Phulkari textiles, juttis and souvenirs, and food stalls offering Amritsari cuisine. The street features decorative lamp posts, benches, statues and open plazas for resting and photography, with clear views of the Golden Temple gateway at the southern end. The area is lively, especially in the evening when illuminated.

History of Heritage Street
Heritage Street was redeveloped as part of the Amritsar Heritage Street beautification project and inaugurated in October 2016 to create a dignified, heritage-style approach to the Golden Temple. The design recreated facades inspired by traditional Amritsari and colonial architecture, replacing the congested approach road with a pedestrian plaza between the Town Hall (built 1866) and the shrine complex.
Culture & Context
The street serves as the ceremonial gateway to Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple), the most significant shrine of Sikhism, and showcases Punjabi culture through architecture, public art, handicrafts and cuisine. It functions as a cultural gathering space for visitors and pilgrims and hosts street performances and displays related to Punjab's heritage.
