History of Hathnikund Barrage
Hathnikund Barrage was constructed between 1996 and 1999 and commissioned in 1999 to replace the ageing Tajewala Barrage originally built in 1873 during British rule. It was built to more effectively regulate Yamuna River waters and distribute them through the Western Yamuna Canal and Eastern Yamuna Canal for irrigation and water supply. The barrage was constructed as part of an inter-state water sharing arrangement involving Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh.
