History of Gurney Drive
Gurney Drive was created on reclaimed land in the 1930s as the New Coast Road and later renamed after Sir Henry Gurney, British High Commissioner in Malaya (1948-1951). The reclamation created a new coastal roadway and residential seafront that became one of George Town's most prestigious addresses and later a famous public leisure and dining waterfront.
Culture & Context
Gurney Drive is culturally significant as one of Penang's most famous hawker food destinations, representing the island's diverse street food culture with Malay, Chinese and Indian dishes. It is a longstanding social gathering place for locals and visitors for evening dining and seaside recreation.
