History of Guisi Lighthouse
Constructed between 1894 and 1896 during the Spanish colonial period as Faro de Punta Luzaran, the lighthouse guided maritime traffic through the Guimaras Strait and Panay Gulf. It is the second oldest lighthouse in the Philippines. The original structure includes a prefabricated iron tower from France and a keeper's house. It was damaged during World War II and later supplemented by a modern solar-powered tower, while the original ruins were preserved as a heritage site.
Culture & Context
The lighthouse is a recognized heritage landmark of Guimaras and a symbol of the province's maritime history. It reflects Spanish-era engineering and is a prominent cultural attraction for visitors interested in colonial history and coastal heritage, often visited together with Guisi Beach.
