About Grindelwald
Grindelwald is a Swiss-themed village in the West Tamar municipality of northern Tasmania, about 15 kilometres north-west of Launceston in the Tamar Valley. Developed in the early 1980s by Dutch immigrant and entrepreneur Roelf Vos, it was modelled on the Swiss town of Grindelwald. The village features chalet-style architecture around an artificial lake and operates as a residential area and tourist resort with accommodation, dining and family leisure facilities.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a small lakeside village with Swiss chalet-style buildings, manicured gardens and an artificial lake. The central area includes the Tamar Valley Resort with accommodation, restaurants and cafes, plus family activities such as mini golf and paddle boats on the lake. Streets are walkable and photogenic, with views over the Tamar Valley countryside. The village is primarily residential and resort-based, offering a quiet, scenic stop rather than a large commercial centre.

History of Grindelwald
Developed from 1980-1981 by Dutch-born Tasmanian entrepreneur Roelf Vos, founder of the Vos supermarket chain, who purchased about 40 hectares in the Tamar Valley to create a replica of the Swiss village of Grindelwald. The project included an artificial lake and Swiss-style chalets and opened as a combined residential and tourist resort in the 1980s, later operating as Tamar Valley Resort.
Culture & Context
The village is notable as a rare Swiss-themed planned settlement in Australia, reflecting post-war European migration influences and themed tourism development in Tasmania. Its chalet architecture and lakeside setting create a distinctive European-style cultural landscape within the Tamar Valley.
