History of Godavari Bund
The bund was constructed as a flood-protection embankment along the Godavari River to protect Rajamahendravaram from seasonal floods. Its development is linked to the river management and irrigation system in the Godavari delta, notably the Dowleswaram Barrage (originally the Dowleswaram Anicut) built by Sir Arthur Cotton in the 19th century, which transformed the region's flood control and irrigation.
Culture & Context
The bund and adjacent ghats, including Pushkar Ghat and Kotilingala Ghat, are central to river-based cultural and religious gatherings. The area is a major venue for Godavari Pushkaralu, held once every 12 years, and for daily evening gatherings, river aarti and festivals that draw visitors to the Godavari riverfront.
