History of Girnar Jain Temple Complex
The Girnar Jain temples date primarily from the 12th century onwards, with major construction and renovations attributed to Jain ministers Vastupala and Tejapala and later patrons. The main Neminath temple is believed to have origins in the 12th century with subsequent restorations. Girnar is traditionally associated with Neminath, the 22nd Tirthankara, who is believed to have attained moksha on the hill, making it an ancient pilgrimage centre mentioned in Jain texts.
Culture & Context
Girnar is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in Jainism, especially for the Shvetambara and Digambara traditions, as the nirvana bhumi of Lord Neminath. The hill is also sacred to Hindus with nearby shrines, and the annual Girnar Parikrama and Kartik Purnima fair attract large numbers of pilgrims. The complex reflects Jain architectural and devotional traditions with active worship and rituals.
