History of Gili Air
Gili Air was traditionally inhabited by fishing communities of Sasak and Bugis origin. From the 1980s and 1990s it developed alongside Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno as part of the Gili Islands tourism area, evolving from a quiet fishing island to a snorkeling and diving destination while retaining a local village settlement.
Culture & Context
The island reflects Sasak and Bugis coastal fishing culture and a small island community lifestyle. It maintains a local village with mosques and traditional livelihoods alongside tourism, and is known for its car-free, low-impact island culture.
