History of Geelong Waterfront
Geelong developed as a major port on Corio Bay from the 1830s. The waterfront was redeveloped as a public recreation area, with the Eastern Beach Reserve constructed in the late 1930s featuring art deco architecture and sea baths. Cunningham Pier, originally built in the 1850s, served port and passenger functions. Recent revitalisation from the 1990s transformed former industrial foreshore into parklands and promenades.
Culture & Context
The waterfront is located on Wadawurrung Country. It is known for the Baywalk Bollards, over 100 painted timber figures by artist Jan Mitchell depicting local history and community characters, and for its role as Geelong's central gathering place for recreation, events and tourism.
