History of Gaurisagar Tank
Gaurisagar Tank was excavated in 1723 by Ahom Queen Phuleswari Devi, wife of King Siva Singha (reigned 1714-1744). It was part of the Ahom capital region's extensive tank and temple building program around Sivasagar. The three temples on its bank - Devi Doul, Vishnu Doul and Shiva Doul - were also built during the same period and represent late Ahom brick temple architecture.
Culture & Context
The tank and its three douls form an important religious and cultural complex for the local community. The Devi Doul is dedicated to Goddess Durga, Vishnu Doul to Lord Vishnu and Shiva Doul to Lord Shiva, reflecting the Ahom period's patronage of Hindu traditions. The site is used for religious observances and is a notable heritage landmark of Assam's Ahom legacy.
