About Gadalathami / Town Beach
Gadalathami / Town Beach is a sandy beach on the Gove Peninsula adjacent to Nhulunbuy in East Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. Located on the western shore of Melville Bay facing the Gulf of Carpentaria, it is the town's main beach and recreation area. Notable for its long sandy shoreline, calm dry-season views, fishing opportunities and Yolngu cultural heritage, it serves as a popular sunset and sightseeing spot close to the town centre.
Visitors guide
Visitors can expect a long, sandy shoreline on Melville Bay with open views across the Gulf of Carpentaria, backed by coastal vegetation and close to Nhulunbuy town centre. The beach is used for beach walking, photography, fishing and sunset viewing rather than swimming. There is a foreshore reserve with parking, picnic tables and shelters. Interpretive signage acknowledges the Yolngu name Gadalathami. The setting is natural and quiet, with tidal flats exposed at low tide and no patrolled swimming area.
