History of Fraserganj Beach
Fraserganj is named after Sir Andrew Fraser (1848-1919), Lieutenant Governor of Bengal from 1903 to 1908, who attempted to develop the area as a seaside resort in the early 1900s. The settlement was earlier known as Narayanitala. The resort plan was abandoned after storms and the area later developed as a fishing centre.
Culture & Context
The beach and harbour are central to the local fishing community of the Sundarbans coastal region. The fishing harbour supports livelihoods and reflects the coastal culture of South 24 Parganas, with daily fishing activities, boat building and fish drying observed by visitors.
