History of Fort Speelwijk
Built in 1685-1686 by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) during the reign of Governor-General Cornelis Speelman, Fort Speelwijk was constructed after VOC intervention in the Banten Sultanate succession conflict. It served as a military garrison and administrative outpost to monitor the Banten Sultanate, control trade access to Banten Bay, and secure Dutch interests in western Java. The fort was later abandoned and is now preserved as part of the Banten Lama heritage complex.
Culture & Context
Fort Speelwijk is designated as a cultural heritage structure (Cagar Budaya) and is a key component of the Banten Lama historic area, which includes palaces, mosques and archaeological remains of the former Banten Sultanate. It represents Dutch colonial military architecture in Indonesia and is valued for education, historical tourism and heritage conservation.
